POCHEM (Point-Of-Care HEMostasis)

Point-of-Care (POC) analysis of blood coagulation (hemostatic function) before and during surgical intervention is well-established for adults but not for children, in particular children with congenital heart problems. Hence the goal of the study is to establish and evaluate a test to assess reliably the quality of the clot and predict postoperative bleeding. The system tested is based on the elasticity and conductivity measurements of the thrombocytes and clot, called thromboelastometry (ROTEM). Usual tests are too time consuming and inaccurate to be useful for bleeding after surgery.
